Hogares Providencia

Mexico City, Mexico

Hogares Providencia in Mexico City was born from the vision of Father Chinchachoma, a priest who dedicated his life to children living on the streets. Today, it is a home for around 110 children and youth, offering them safety, stability, and the chance to rebuild their lives with dignity. GM Children Foundation sponsored US $6,500 to hire an additional full-time caregiver. With this support, Hogares Providencia can ease the burden on existing staff and make sure every child receives the daily attention, guidance, and love they need to grow with confidence.

Hogares Providencia began as a refuge for children who once survived on the streets, a place where protection, stability, and a sense of self-worth could slowly return. Today, around 110 children and teens live in the home, each carrying a story shaped by resilience and the search for safety.

Walking through the house, you feel those stories everywhere. The staircase in the common area is lined with toys donated over the years, small reminders that these children are not forgotten, that many hearts have chosen to stand beside them. Shared spaces are alive with energy: a library where imagination blooms, a basketball court echoing with laughter, and a computer room where children connect to the wider world and practice new skills. These are not just facilities; they are places where trust is rebuilt and futures are quietly shaped.

But caring for children who have experienced abandonment or life on the streets requires more than spaces, it requires people. Consistent, loving adults who show up every day to help with routines, soothe anxieties, and remind children they are safe. Recognizing how essential this presence is, GM Children Foundation sponsored an additional dedicated caregiver (USD 6,500) to strengthen the home’s capacity through:

  • 🧡 Daily emotional presence: offering comfort, reassurance, and stability to children healing from difficult beginnings.

  • 📘 Guidance through everyday routines: supporting mealtimes, homework, bedtime, and the small daily moments that create safety and structure.

  • 🌱 More attention for every child: improving caregiver-to-child ratios so each child is truly seen, heard, and understood.

Through this added support, we hope every child at Hogares Providencia experiences not just shelter, but the steady, caring relationships that help them rebuild trust and imagine a brighter future.

2025

  • 📍 September – Our team visited Hogares Providencia in Mexico City, meeting with the director and project manager to better understand their work and the challenges of caring for 110 children.

  • 💛 October – GM Children Foundation began sponsoring a full-time caregiver to help ease the load on existing staff and ensure each child receives more individual attention and care. 🌿

Hogares Providencia does incredible work with limited staff. The most urgent needs are people — caring adults and specialists who can be there every day for the 110 children who call this place home.

Priority needs:

1. Caregivers for each house

  • Hire 5 additional caregivers (2 per house) to ensure safer ratios and more individual attention for every child.

2.  In-house psychiatrist

  • Hire an on-site psychiatrist to work alongside the current psychologist, offering deeper mental health support, diagnosis, and follow-up for children with complex histories.

3. After-school education support

  • Fund 3 additional teachers for after-school care (currently there is only 1) to support 80–85 children aged 6–16 with homework, tutoring, and learning gaps.

4. Sports & recreation teacher (part-time)

  • Hire a part-time sports and recreation teacher to run weekend and after-school activities like soccer, basketball, and swimming — key for confidence, teamwork, and emotional well-being.
