Hogar Esperanza

Puerto Morona, Ecuador

Tucked deep in the Ecuadorian Amazon near the border of Peru, the Shuar community faces challenges that reach far beyond geography. Families live across remote river areas where access to clean water, education, nutrition, and stable income remains difficult. After visiting the community and meeting with local leaders, teachers, parents, and students, GM Foundation identified digital education as one of their most urgent needs. GM Foundation is sponsoring an $11,000 Digital Classroom Project to help build a computer lab for a school serving approximately 500 students, creating new opportunities for learning and connection with the wider world.

Reaching the Shuar community meant leaving the city behind and traveling nearly seven hours from Cuenca through winding mountain roads, gradually entering the heart of the Amazon near the Ecuador and Peru border.

Before our arrival, local tribal leaders had already organized a large gathering at the community school. Parents, teachers, students, and residents from nearby villages came together to share their stories and hopes for the future.

One moment stayed with us.

Parents and teachers took turns sharing their daily realities through a speaker system. They spoke about rivers that no longer provide enough food, unsafe water during the rainy season, and children traveling by canoe just to reach school. Many families face challenges with nutrition, clean water, and access to education. Yet despite these difficulties, the conversation was not centered on hardship.

It was centered on hope.

Again and again, parents and teachers shared one wish:

โ€œWe hope our children can have access to computers.โ€

For this community, technology is more than equipment. It represents opportunity.

The school currently serves around 500 students from surrounding communities and plays an important role in creating opportunities for the next generation.

Recognizing this need, GM Foundation is sponsoring an USD 11,000 Digital Classroom Project to help establish a computer lab for the school through:

๐Ÿ’ป Creating access to digital education by providing computers and learning equipment for students

๐Ÿ“š Expanding opportunities for children to develop technology and research skills

๐ŸŒŽ Opening connections to knowledge and learning resources beyond their remote environment

๐ŸŒฑ Supporting long term educational development identified directly by community leaders, teachers, and families

Through this project, we hope children in the Shuar community gain more than access to technology.A computer classroom is not simply a room. It is the first window into a larger world.

2025
๐Ÿ“ October โ€“ GM Foundation visited the Shuar community in the Ecuadorian Amazon, meeting with local leaders, teachers, parents, and students to better understand their needs and explore opportunities for long term support.

๐Ÿ’› November โ€“ GM Foundation provided funding for the Digital Classroom Project, supporting the creation of a computer lab that will serve approximately 500 students in the community.

2026
๐Ÿ— January โ€“ May โ€“ Construction of a dedicated concrete room for the future digital lab began. The space is being prepared to safely house computers and learning equipment before installation.

๐ŸŒฑ Current Status โ€“ Construction is still in progress as the community continues working toward completing the learning space that will become home to the new digital classroom.

The Digital Classroom Project is only the beginning.

During our visit, we found that many challenges remain for children and families in the Shuar community. Beyond education, transportation, nutrition, and basic school access continue to affect daily life.

Current needs identified include:

๐Ÿšฃ School Transportation Program

Many children travel long distances between riverside communities and schools. A reliable transportation system could help provide free daily access to education, using either a solar powered canoe (preferred option) or a gas powered canoe. The project would include purchasing the boat and supporting a dedicated driver responsible for daily school transportation.

๐Ÿฝ School Nutrition Program

Teachers expressed the need for a nutrition program, particularly for the 75 elementary students.

Local volunteers are prepared to help coordinate meal preparation, with the goal of providing daily breakfasts and potentially lunches. The estimated maximum cost is approximately USD 50 per day.

๐Ÿ“š School Supplies Support

Basic school materials remain a challenge for many families. Sponsoring supplies at approximately USD 25 per child would help students access essential learning materials and reduce financial pressure on parents.

๐ŸŒฑ Long Term Community Development

GM Foundation and local leaders continue exploring future projects focused on education, nutrition, transportation, and improving opportunities for children across the community.
