Casa de Las Mercedes

Mexico City, Mexico

Casa de Las Mercedes is a safe home for girls who have experienced social abandonment and various forms of abuse at an early age. Many arrive with interrupted schooling, fragile trust, and emotional wounds that take time to heal. At the home, they receive protection, health care, education, and the chance to rediscover the joy of childhood. Through our 2025 partnership, GM Children Foundation sponsors a full-time tutor with an annual budget of USD 6,500, ensuring the girls receive addtional academic support to catch up in school, stay engaged in learning, and build stronger futures.

At Casa de Las Mercedes, every girl arrives with a story that began too early. Some have lived through abandonment, violence, or exploitation long before they were old enough to understand the world around them. By the time they reach the home, school has often been interrupted, trust is fragile, and childhood feels very far away.

Casa de Las Mercedes exists to change that direction. The home offers refuge first — a stable place where girls aged 2 to 18 can sleep without fear, eat regularly, and be surrounded by adults who show up every day. Over time, this consistency begins to rebuild a sense of safety. What makes the organization’s work especially powerful is its long-term approach: healing from early trauma cannot be rushed, and each girl is supported at her own pace to move from surviving to imagining a different future.

The foundation of this healing lies in daily routines and steady relationships:

  • 📚 Education at the center: dedicated homework workshops, on-site pedagogical support, and constant encouragement to stay in school.

  • 🧠 Long-term mental health care: ongoing therapy and emotional accompaniment to help the girls regain stability and confidence.

  • 🚨 Leadership in trafficking prevention: training and advocacy efforts to protect vulnerable children and adolescents across the wider community.

Despite the home’s tireless efforts to rebuild trust and routine, many girls with years of interrupted learning still carry the quiet belief that school is meant for others, not for them. The education programs at Casa de Las Mercedes lay a strong foundation, and we hope to strengthen it further.

GM Children Foundation is sponsoring a full-time tutor (USD 6,500 per year), providing, one-on-one support to help each girl reconnect with learning at her own pace. A tutor who shows up every day: guiding homework, rebuilding study habits, and celebrating small wins.

2025

  • 📍 August – Our team visited Casa de Las Mercedes in Mexico City, meeting with the program manager to better understand the girls’ daily needs, the challenges they face, and the home’s long-term aspirations.

  • 💛 October – GM Children Foundation started supporting Casa de Las Mercedes by funding a full-time tutor, giving the girls steady academic guidance and a more supported learning journey throughout the school year.

Basic daily needs are a big part of Casa de Las Mercedes’ budget, and some areas are especially urgent right now.

🧴 Hygiene & basic supplies
Hygiene products are particularly in need: items like soap, shampoo, sanitary products, and cleaning supplies help the girls stay healthy, comfortable, and dignified in their day-to-day lives.

🛠️ Rooftop repairs
The organization’s rooftop is damaged and needs repair to keep the space safe and functional. Fixing it will help protect the home and ensure the girls can continue living and studying in a secure environment.
