Baitul Qowwam Orphanage

Yogyakarta, Indonesia

Founded in 2009 after a young child approached the founder for shelter, Baitul Qowwam has grown from caring for 4 children to 43 today. The home is known for its strong community spirit, transparent operations, and emphasis on education: building their own small school so children can continue studying safely. Through our 2025 partnership, GM Children Foundation supported the setup of a Digital Learning Lab and library shelves with new books to strengthen their learning environment and digital readiness.

The name Baitul Qowwam means “House of Strength”, a fitting reflection of the home’s spirit. When we first visited, the children welcomed us with shy smiles and quiet curiosity, while the founder shared how everything began with a simple act of compassion: one child in need of a home. Over time, that single gesture grew into a caring community guided by faith, education, and self-reliance. What we noticed firsthand:

136 graduates so far, 36 have continued to university. Many now return to volunteer, teach, and give back.

💛 The home stands out for its transparency, every donation and expense is publicly recorded.

🌱 They also pursue self-sustainability, from small-scale farming and goat-raising to early plans for a micro-hydro power station.

Yet behind the success, there were gaps. Limited digital access meant students had to rely on handwritten work or borrowed devices. GM Children Foundation is helping to set up a small lab of shared computers and a refreshed reading corner. We hope to give every child the tools to keep learning, creating, and dreaming.

2025

  • 📅 August — GM visited Baitul Qowwam to spend time with the children and learn more about their daily life and needs.

  • 💰 September — We’re excited to share that GM is supporting the setup of a Digital Lab and Library (USD 6,200) to help students explore, learn, and stay connected.

Baitul Qowwam continues to grow, and so do their dreams. Beyond the Digital Lab, the home is working to improve daily living conditions and create long-term sustainability.

You can make a difference by supporting:

  • 🛏️ Beds and mattresses for the girls’ dormitory, ensuring every child has a clean and comfortable place to rest.

  • 🏫 School collaboration opportunities, connect with schools (e.g., a potential “sister school” in Singapore) to share learning resources, mentorship, and student exchanges.

  • 💡 Entrepreneurship learning, help equip children and caregivers with practical skills to plan, create, and manage small-scale projects sustainably.

Every contribution — whether knowledge, materials, or resources — helps strengthen the foundation for children to learn, grow, and thrive.
